Bay Area San Francisco Counseling and Therapy Services: Divorce Services for Parents at BACF

Need more information about divorce?

You may have been thinking of leaving your marriage for years but haven't been able to take action either to fix the marriage or to end it. This is often because the fantasy of leaving is a lot simpler than the reality. In your mind, ending the marriage is a relief, a way to let go of the problems. But in reality, leaving is hard. It's hard on a practical level and an emotional level. One of the ways to help yourself get closer to a decision is to get more information about what the process of divorce is really like. I offer a three-hour workshop that repeats monthly in Berkeley and San Francisco. The workshop addresses emotional, logistical and legal concerns that people face when contemplating divorce.

At this stage, the Divorce Workshop can be a good option for starting your information search. Here you'll learn about the emotional and logistical aspects of divorce. You'll also be able to talk to others in the same situation. You'll feel less alone, and may even learn more about yourself through others experiences.

Most people leave the workshop with a solid sense of direction. They either choose to address the problems and the issues in their relationship. Or they recognize that they'll need to end the relationship and carefully choose the right time to separate, and find the resources and support they need in that process.

DIVORCE 101: Workshop covers three essential aspects of separation

Divorce is difficult enough to talk about, let alone experience. Even if you are ending a difficult relationship there is loss, letting go, and learning to move on. The logistics of divorce can be overwhelming. When you separate you may need to divide your household, assets, and determine custody -- with or without the help of a lawyer. The paperwork alone can be all-consuming. While divorce is an ending, it is also an opportunity to grow, learn, and develop healthier ways of communicating for yourself and your kids. Divorce 101 is designed to help you get all the information you need to get through a divorce practically and emotionally.

Emotional aspects of divorce, yours and your family's

“I lived at home and acted as if everything was fine, but emotionally, I left our marriage 5 years ago. I kept it to myself because I didn't want to disrupt my children's lives."

When a marriage ends, there is often guilt, shame, anger, resentment, sadness and grief. Most commonly, all these feelings come up - sometimes together, sometimes separately, sometimes in waves, and sometimes delayed until shock wears off. Kids may feel afraid, not knowing what the future will be like, where they will live, how they will live or how life will be different. Participants will give and receive support, helping each other get through the emotional aspects of divorce. Knowing what to expect- how to help your kids, and how to take care of your own feelings- will help you get through this difficult time.

Logistical aspects of divorce: Forms legal information and referrals

"I need a place to get all the information: When do I retain a lawyer?"

Divorce can bring up questions you may never have thought you would ask. We will talk about how to get the right forms filled out correctly, what to expect from the legal system, how to work with attorneys, and how to get all the referrals you need to make the process as smooth as possible. Creating a healthy future for you and your family

"How is this going to affect the kids? I there is such a thing as a healthy divorce?"

In this session, we focus on the future. So often anger, pain and hurt from the relationship linger into the divorce. Kids may inadvertently get dragged into the drama. Resentment can get in the way of letting go and moving on. We'll talk about the do's and don'ts of divorce. Learn how to make (and follow through on) a commitment to a healthy and peaceful future.
