Bay Area San Francisco Counseling and Therapy Services: Divorce Services for Parents at BACF

Co-Parenting Therapy

After you get the basics in the Co-parenting Workshop you and your child's parent may need a place to talk ongoing and work out the next phase of raisings kids together. As kids grow so does the need for adjusting the parenting plan, routine and schedule. Often people write co-parenting sessions into their parenting plan.

Only the death of a spouse, parent or child is more stressful than divorce. The cost, in terms of time, energy, money and almost every other measure, is staggering. It can ruin careers and exhaust emotional and financial resources. It is guaranteed to hurt the children. Co-parent counseling is one way to reduce the negative effects on children and help bring the process to a conclusion.

Couples who want their children to continue to be nourished by their parents, despite a radically altered relationship, can gain the following abilities in sessions of Co-parent Therapy:

  • Develop a parenting plan that works for each developmental stage
  • Recognize the stages of divorce and where you are now
  • Learn to communicate without past emotion
  • Assist your child in the transition and with logistics
  • Base decisions on the needs of your child
  • Communicate about your child’s symptoms without blaming each other

Co-parenting therapy can help you through the restructure of your family after a separation or divorce. When you are able to hear each other without taking each other so personally, the process gets a lot easier.

When scheduling your Co-parenting therapy appointment to begin our sessions I meet with each parent separately, and then we meet altogether, negotiating how many times will be productive for you both.

I also offer a workshop called "Divorce 101." This may be the place to start learning about the process of divorce - making it easier and less painful for your whole family.

You may also want to look at some of the books I listed to help parents and children through separation. Book suggestions for parents divorcing and book suggestions for children of divorce.
