Parenting Tips
As a parent it is very important that we engage with
the people who we entrust our children’s education and care
to daily. Here are some good conversation starters to use the next
time you conference with your child’s teacher, principal, childcare
provider, preschool teacher, etc.

For children:
Preschool to elementary school ages as appropriate.
- What are some of my child’s strengths and/or
special talents that you have noticed?
- What are some of the activities that my child does
well or enjoys?
- Does my child need any extra attention? If so, at
what times during the day or during which activities?
- Can you tell me about how my child is able to share
and play with other children?
- How does my child do when it is time to end an activity
and begin another activity?
- What does my child enjoy doing during “free
time” or unstructured play?
- Tell me about how my child is able to focus and complete
tasks and assignments.
- Are there other adults at school/preschool/program
who you think I should talk with about my child? (For instance,
art teacher, P.E. teacher, music teacher, science teacher, reading
specialist, counselor, principal, preschool director, etc…)
- Are you getting all of the homework assignments returned
on time and completed?
- How can I, as a parent, help my child enjoy his or
her experience at school more?
For Infants:
- Is my baby held when fed?
- How often is my baby held and/or rocked?
- How do you soothe a crying baby? What works to calm
my baby?
- How often does my baby cry? Is he/she more vocal
or quieter than others?
- How frequent are diaper changes?
- What kind of toys/activities offer for babies? What
does my baby like to play with?
- How often are infant toys cleaned?
- Is there a separate area for infants (away from older
kids)?
- How much time does my baby spend in a crib, playpen
or walker?
