PARENTING COURSE FOR FATHERS OF CHILDREN AGED 0-11

Eight Thursday Evenings (June 18-August 6, 2009)

Are you having problems with your children over any or all of the following?

  • fighting
  • chores
  • homework
  • bedtime
  • sharing
  • responsibility
  • mealtime
  • getting up and off to school without nagging

If so, this course can help! In this course, you will learn a specific method to help solve these and other behavior problems your children might have. You will also learn how to help your children develop self-discipline, responsibility, problem-solving skills and self-esteem. The method you will learn is a simple and very effective parenting method called “positive discipline,” developed by Jane Nelsen. Beyond helping you to change your children’s behavior, this method can help you connect to your children on a deeper level.

Fathers these days are called upon to be more than just breadwinners and moral guides. Biological or not, resident or not, fathers are called upon to be full parents, engaged in nurturing, positive and emotionally supportive relationships with their children. Positive discipline can lay the foundation for this kind of relationship with your children.

Studies have shown that children whose fathers are positively involved in their lives are more successful in school and relationships, more empathic, less aggressive, and less likely to get in trouble with the law. And fathers who are positively involved in their children’s lives are healthier and happier!

Course Outline:

Week 1 (June 18): What is Positive Discipline?

Week 2 (June 25): Discipline, not Punishment

Week 3 (July 2): The Mistaken Goals of Misbehavior

Week 4 (July 9): Natural and Logical Consequences

Week 5 (July 16): Encouraging Children

Week 6 (July 23): Family Meetings

Week 7 (July 30): Raising Children Compassionately

Week 8 (August 6): Love and Joy in Families

The weekly class meetings will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at the Berkeley offices of Bay Area Children First, 1400 Shattuck Avenue (at Rose Street), Suite 7. The cost of each class meeting is $20, to be paid in advance.

The course text will be Jane Nelsen’s Positive Discipline (Revised Updated Edition, 2006). Please bring it, and a few photos of your child or children, to the first class meeting.

The instructor, John Roedel, MFT, has worked with children and families for more than eight years, focusing especially on conflict reduction and resolution. He is pursuing a PhD in nonviolence, psychology and religion at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
