Welcome to Bay Area Children First! Founded in 1994 by psychotherapist, Susan Regan, MFT, Bay Area Children First (BACF)’s mission is to promote safe and healthy environments for children who have been placed in foster care for reasons of child abuse and/or neglect, or who are experiencing emotional trauma due to family separation, severe dysfunction, substance abuse, domestic violence, divorce, disease, death, incarceration, or other family problems. BACF is a non-profit organization with offices in Berkeley and San Francisco. We provide San Francisco and Alameda County children and families with quality counseling, educational, and mental health support services. Over the last 14 years, BACF has provided mental health counseling, sand-tray/play therapy and parenting support services for over 4,500 Bay Area children and their families in both San Francisco and Alameda Counties, (75% were children ages birth to 5 years) -- in family visiting rooms, foster homes, office or school based services. We have also provided over 100 professional trainings and family workshops for child welfare agencies, foster parents, kinship or adoptive parents about how best to support and parent children who have experienced abuse, neglect or have witnessed violence. In June 2007, BACF was awarded a two-year grant from First 5 Alameda – Every Child Counts to provide direct mental health services for children 0 – 5 in Alameda County preschools and childcare centers. We are currently providing direct early childhood mental health services, which include individual counseling for children and their parents/ caregivers, therapeutic play groups, and parenting education/support groups in Berkeley preschools and elementary schools.
